Coaches Corner - tip of the month

FEBRUARY, 2012:

Coaching Tips from Jak Beardsworth TennisUNDERSTANDING TERMINOLOGY:
Drill vs Clinic vs Team Practice

It’s not unusual to overhear these terms being used interchangeably in clubland. But they are not exactly the same thing.

A “drill” is best defined as a specific on-court exercise aimed at improving one particular shot or tactic. Some pros even choose to not offer corrective instruction, preferring to focus singularly on just the physical repetition.

A “clinic” is typically multi-faceted featuring 2-3 shot or tactical scenarios.
Coaching is always an integral component. Individual tips are typically offered during ball pick-up.

A pro led “team practice” is literally that – a roster of similarly rated players on a league team coming together to, first and foremost, build camaraderie by working together. It’s also about staying sharp, continuing to improve, and getting on the same page regarding doubles team positioning and shot selection, and developing tactical and strategic options for competitive success in match play.

Most important of all is the necessity of all players to accept, and commit to, that there is no I in team sports.
